Tortoises

Both tortoises and turtles are reptiles. The cliché, ‘Older than the hills’ is an accurate description of their antiquity; turtles and tortoises are two of Costa Rica’s earliest settlers. They belong to one of two families, either Testudine or Chelonia family, and have inched their way across the globe for over 157 million years; not only are their origins prehistoric they live throughout the world.

Scientific records catalogue over 320 species of tortoises and turtles on the planet. Most are land-lubbers and prefer to spend their lives on terra firma. ‘Sea Turtles’ have flippers instead of legs. There are only 7-different Sea Turtle species, ranging in size from the leatherback, which grows up to 7 feet (2 meters) long and weighs up to 2,000 lbs. (900 kilograms), to the Kemp’s Ridley turtle, which grows to about 2 feet (65 cm) long and weighs 100 lbs. (45 kg).
